Abstract:

Objectives The primary aim of the proposed study is to identify the skills, attitude and use of evidence-based practice (EBP) among Portuguese Osteopaths. Methods A cross-sectional national survey was conducted (March to July 2023) among Portuguese Osteopaths. Eligible participants were invited to completed the Portuguese-translated Evidence-Based practice Attitude and Utilization Survey (EBASE) anonymously online. Results A total of 102 Osteopaths completed the survey. The sample appeared to represent the Portuguese Osteopathic profession. The majority of the osteopaths demonstrated a positive attitude towards EBP (90%) and claimed that they had moderate to high skills in conducting and applying EBP. However, 32.4% mentioned they had never used an “online database” to search for EBP and the information sources used most frequently to inform their clinical decision-making were textbooks. Moreover, the major barriers reported to implement EBP were “clinical evidence in osteopathic medicine”, lack of industry support for evidence-based practice”, and “lack of time”. The osteopaths regarded all of the survey questions about EBP enablers to be very useful on an average of more than 66.7%, being the most representative “access to the internet in the workplace” and “access to online education materials related to EBP”. Conclusion The results of the present survey revealed that Portuguese Osteopaths are in general familiar with EBP and exhibit a positive attitude towards EBP, moderate-high self-perceived skills, but a low level of engagement in the use of EBP. The implementation of EBP in Osteopathy is challenging and complex and entails behavioural changes by the osteopaths. German language (translated by Ostlib) Ziele: Das primäre Ziel der vorgeschlagenen Studie ist es, die Fähigkeiten, Einstellungen und die Anwendung evidenzbasierter Praxis (EBP) unter portugiesischen Osteopathen zu ermitteln. Methoden: Es wurde eine nationale Querschnittsumfrage (März bis Juli 2023) unter portugiesischen Osteopathen durchgeführt. Teilnahmeberechtigte Personen wurden gebeten, den ins Portugiesische übersetzten Fragebogen zur Einstellung und Anwendung evidenzbasierter Praxis (EBASE) anonym online auszufüllen. Ergebnisse Insgesamt nahmen 102 Osteopathen an der Umfrage teil. Die Stichprobe schien repräsentativ für den portugiesischen Osteopathenberuf zu sein. Die Mehrheit der Osteopathen zeigte eine positive Einstellung gegenüber EBP (90 %) und gab an, über mäßige bis hohe Kompetenzen in der Durchführung und Anwendung von EBP zu verfügen. Allerdings gaben 32,4 % an, dass sie noch nie eine „Online-Datenbank” zur Suche nach EBP genutzt hätten und dass die am häufigsten genutzten Informationsquellen für ihre klinischen Entscheidungen Lehrbücher seien. Darüber hinaus wurden als größte Hindernisse für die Umsetzung von EBP „klinische Evidenz in der Osteopathie”, „mangelnde Unterstützung der Industrie für evidenzbasierte Praxis” und „Zeitmangel” genannt. Die Osteopathen bewerteten alle Fragen der Umfrage zu EBP-Förderfaktoren mit durchschnittlich mehr als 66,7 % als sehr nützlich, wobei „Zugang zum Internet am Arbeitsplatz” und „Zugang zu Online-Schulungsmaterialien im Zusammenhang mit EBP” am repräsentativsten waren. Schlussfolgerung: Die Ergebnisse der vorliegenden Umfrage zeigten, dass portugiesische Osteopathen im Allgemeinen mit EBP vertraut sind und eine positive Einstellung zu EBP sowie moderate bis hohe selbst eingeschätzte Fähigkeiten aufweisen, jedoch nur in geringem Maße EBP anwenden. Die Umsetzung von EBP in der Osteopathie ist anspruchsvoll und komplex und erfordert Verhaltensänderungen seitens der Osteopathen.
