Abstract:

Purpose: Interprofessional collaboration plays a crucial role in improving patient care outcomes, especially in underserved communities. In an effort to enhance pharmacy and medical student education, our Student Society of Health-System Pharmacy (SSHP) chapter collaborated with students from the Texas College of Osteopathic Medicine to volunteer at the Fort Worth Homeless Outreach through Medical Education (HOME) clinic, serving the unhoused population. Our goal is to deliver patient education to a population that often faces barriers to healthcare access, promote interprofessional learning, and raise the standards of patient-centered care at the clinic. Methods: A presentation outlining roles for student physicians and pharmacists was distributed prior to the event. Patient care teams consisted of 2 student physicians and 1 student pharmacist. A physician and pharmacist were present to supervise students and provided an educational debriefing session at the end of the event. A pre-and post-survey design was implemented using the validated SPICE-R tool (Dominguez et al., 2015) to evaluate student perceptions of interprofessional education and practice. Surveys were administered before and after participation in clinic activities to assess changes in attitudes towards interprofessional collaboration, communication, and patient care. Unpaired t-tests were used to compare pre-and post-means. Results: Preliminary data indicate an improvement in students' perceptions of the importance of interprofessional collaboration, particularly in understanding the complementary roles of pharmacy and medical students in delivering comprehensive care. Data analysis is ongoing, and full results will be presented at the conference. Conclusion: Collaborative efforts between pharmacy and medical students in clinical settings like the Homeless Outreach through Medical Education (HOME) clinic can positively influence students' attitudes toward interprofessional practice. These findings underscore the value of integrating interprofessional experiences in health professional education to foster teamwork in patient care.
