Abstract:

Wissenschaftlicher Hintergrund: Diese Masterthesis untersucht, wie die Auseinandersetzung mit der Embryologie den diagnostischen und therapeutischen Prozess in der osteopathischen Praxis beeinflusst. Sie zeigt, dass embryologische Prinzipien von Formbildung, Bewegung und Selbstorganisation zentrale Grundlagen der osteopathischen Arbeit sind. Ziel ist es, zu erforschen, ob und in welcher Weise Kenntnisse der Embryologie das Verständnis von Diagnose und Therapie verändern und welche Herausforderungen sich daraus ergeben. Methodik: Die Methodik dieser Arbeit beruht auf einer qualitativen Forschungsstrategie, die 12 halbstrukturierte Expert:inneninterviews umfasst, darunter 2 asymmetrische Interviews. Befragt wurden erfahrene Osteopath:innen und Lehrende mit besonderem embryologischem Hintergrund. Die Auswertung erfolgte mithilfe der qualitativen Inhaltsanalyse nach Mayring, wobei zentrale Kategorien zu Lernprozess, Intuition, Diagnostik und Therapie gebildet wurden. Ergebnisse: Die Ergebnisse zeigen, dass embryologische Kenntnisse die Wahrnehmung lebendiger Strukturen verändern und den diagnostischen sowie therapeutischen Zugang prägen. Sie fördern eine intuitive, prozesshafte Sichtweise und unterstützen eine achtsame Haltung im therapeutischen Kontext. Gleichzeitig wird auf das Risiko der Überinterpretation und das Festhalten an älteren Theorien hingewiesen, ohne aktuelle wissenschaftliche Erkenntnisse ausreichend einzubeziehen. Conclusio: Die Beschäftigung mit der Embryologie kann Diagnostik und Therapie in der osteopathischen Praxis nachhaltig prägen, wenn sie reflektiert, evidenzbasiert und methodisch bewusst integriert wird. Sie fordert eine Haltung der Achtsamkeit, wissenschaftlichen Klarheit und bewussten Kommunikation, um embryologische Prinzipien als lebendige Grundlage osteopathischer Arbeit zu nutzen.

Background: This masterthesis explores how the study of embryology influences the diagnostic and therapeutic processes in osteopathic practice. It demonstrates that embryological principles of form, movement, and self-organization represent core foundations of osteopathic work. The aim is to examine whether and in what way knowledge of embryology changes the understanding of diagnosis and therapy and which challenges arise from it. Research design and method: The methodology of this study is based on a qualitative research design comprising 12 semi-structured expert interviews, including 2 asymmetrical interviews. Participants were experienced osteopaths and educators with a particular background in embryology. The data were analyzed using Mayring’s qualitative content analysis, through which the main categories learning process, intuition, diagnosis, and therapy were developed. Results: The results show that knowledge of embryology changes the perception of living structures and shapes both diagnostic and therapeutic approaches. It fosters an intuitive, process-oriented perspective and supports a mindful attitude in the therapeutic context. At the same time, concerns are raised about overinterpretation and reliance on older theories without sufficient integration of current scientific knowledge. Conclusion: Engaging with embryology can significantly shape diagnostic and therapeutic practice in osteopathy when it is integrated in a reflective, evidence-informed, and methodologically conscious way. It requires an attitude of mindfulness, scientific clarity, and transparent communication in order to use embryological principles as a living foundation for osteopathic work.
