Abstract:

The present work tries to unravel, from the reading of Andrew Taylor Still's Autobiography (1828-1917), how the structuring of osteopathy occurred as a manipulative practice on which he focused most part of his life. During his trajectory in the troubled United States of the 19th century, Still integrated his life into medicine, whether in war or missions, when he learned regular medicine and came into contact with non-regular and manipulative medicine for the development of osteopathy. Throughout the nineteenth century, medicine also underwent transformations, a moment marked by the opening of new nonregular medicinal practices and, later, manipulative ones – homeopathy, thomsonian, indigenous medicine, hydropathy, massage, movement-cure, magnetic therapy. These movements intertwined Still's personal and professional path, establishing a boundary between other medicines and osteopathy.

O presente trabalho tenta desvendar, a partir da leitura da Autobiografia de Andrew Taylor Still (1828-1917), como se deu a estruturação da osteopatia enquanto uma prática manipulativa sobre a qual ele se debruçou grande parte de sua vida. Durante sua trajetória nos conturbados Estados Unidos do século XIX, Still integrava sua vida à medicina, seja na guerra ou nas missões, momentos em que aprendeu a medicina regular e entrou em contato com as medicinas não regulares e manipulativas para o desenvolvimento da osteopatia. Ao longo do século XIX, a medicina também passara por transformações, momento marcado pela abertura de novas práticas medicinais não regulares e, posteriormente, as manipulativas – homeopatia, tonsoniana, medicina indígena, hidropatia, massagem, cura pelo movimento, terapia magnética. Esses movimentos entrelaçaram o percurso pessoal e profissional de Still, estabelecendo uma fronteira entre as demais medicinas e a osteopatia.
