Abstract:
The presented work constitutes a detailed description and comparison of historical, biomechanical models for the iliosacral joint. In this context especially the publications by H. H. Fryette, W. F. Strachan and F. L. Mitchell will be described in great detail and applied to the question how the iliosacral joint actually moves. The main focus is paid to the explanation of the biomechanical model by F. L. Mitchell, since it represents the most detailled descriptions with the highest predictive power and hence is most frequently used in osteopathy to this date. Since Mitchell’s model is at the same time used to justify the effectiveness of muscle energy techniques, this topic will also be addressed shortly. A comparison with other publications from known osteopaths (i.e. the Strachan model and the Fryette model versus the Mitchell model) as well as with an additional, chiropractic approach (the Gonstead modell versus the Mitchell model) with regard to consistency of these biomechanical models and some treatment techniques derived therefrom are an additional important aspect of the presented work.
