Abstract:

The history of functional technique is described with the works of Harold Hoover, Charles Bowles und William Johnston. Many contemporary witnesses report about ideas, efforts and debates within the american osteopathic movement in the middle of the last century about a modified perception in osteopathic diagnosis and treatment. It becomes apparent, how strong the gained knowledge in neurophysiology, kybernetics and information theory altered the osteopathic concepts and which great challenges confronted Hoover, Bowles and Johnston during their development of the functional technique.
