Abstract:

Interoceptive afferents inform the brain of the state of the “internal environment“, which initiates appropriate reactions to ensure homeostasis or to correct its disturbance allostatically. This article discusses, among other things, the possibility that interoceptors also detect the adhesion forces acting between the thoracic and abdominal organs and that their central nervous integration contributes significantly to the awareness of our “material self“. Osteopathic visceral techniques interact with this interplay of forces and thus influence the patient's interoception.
