Abstract:
The skin is a dynamic sensory organ. Long before the infant can interpret spoken words, he/she takes part in the world via the nonverbal communication of the skin contact. The skin is the mediator between the inside and the outside. At the time of birth, the skin of an infant is the largest organ and will remain it for his/her whole life. Cells, which are peeled off, form the largest part of the Vernix caseosa, which is responsible for the lubricating effect during birth. With premature or newborn infants, already stimuli with a low threshold – for example pain stimuli, as caused by injections or invasive examinations – are enough to lead to a sensitizing mechanism.
