Abstract:
Aim: Answer the following question: “Are there differences in the visceral dysfunction in nullipara women as a function of the Trendelenburg sign?“ Study design: double-blind, pragmatic, randomized controlled study Method: 37 female subjects (19 to 29 years old) showing a positive Trendelenburg sign were divided into a case group (n=17) and a control group (n=12). 8 subjects were excluded from the study. A manual muscle function test of the hip abductors and a modified Trendelenburg test were used to allocate the subjects to the groups. Both for the case group and the control group, (n=29) 5 parameters were evaluated using a questionnaire (acute pain, hip problems and hip ultrasound as a baby, complaints during menstruation and ovulation) and 14 parameters (inspection of the uterus, the sigmoid, the caecum; anterior/inferior and posterior/superior mobility of the uterus, medial and lateral mobility of the sigmoid, medial, lateral and superior mobility of the caecum, anterior and posterior mobility of the Lamina sacro-recto-genito-pubicalis, right and left mobility of the broad ligament of the uterus) were tested using visceral examination. Results: There were no statistically significant differences in the parameters between the case group and the control group. Discussion: The high number of excluded subjects (21.62 %) and of subjects in the case group (45.94 %) may indicate that the Trendelenburg sign might have been tested false positive. Therefore, additional devices such as hand-dynamometers, electromyography and a video-supported gait analysis are required. Furthermore, it is recommended to repeat the study using a larger number of samples.
