Abstract:
Introduction: Pneumonia is the leading cause of death in infectious diseases in Europe, despite the use of antibiotics and antiviral medications. Before antibiotics, osteopathic manual therapy (OMT) was successful in fighting pneumonia. Therefore, the objective of this study is to systematically review and summarize randomized controlled trials (RCTs) and to evaluate latest evidence of additive OMT in pneumonia. Material and methods: The literature was electronically searched in: International Journal of Osteopathic Medicine, The Journal of the American Osteopathic Association, Journal of Bodywork and Movement Therapies, Osteopathic Medicine and Primary Care Journal, Osteopathic Research Web, OSTMED.DR, PEDro, PubMed and scholar google. Included were RCTs which compared OMT with other interventions in pneumonia. The risk of bias and type of effects were examined. The relevant outcomes and study characteristics were summarized. Results: The literature search identified 202 references, of which eight were included, inclusive three animal RCTs, five human RCTs and an additional subgroup analysis. All three animal studies were exploratory designed and showed a significant reduction of bacterial burden in the lung of rats using lymph pump technique (p<.05). OMT decreased the number of deaths generally and significantly in the age group ?75 (p=.005) and in the pulmonary severity index V group (p=.05). The period of antibiotic therapy (ABT) was in all OMT groups shorter and so was the length of hospital stay (LOS). Conclusion: Osteopathy as an adjunctive treatment in pneumonia may have the potential to reduce the length of hospital stay, the duration of antibiotic therapy and the mortality rate.
Abstract original language:
Material und Methoden: Die elektronische Literatursuche wurde im International Journal of Osteopathic Medicine, Journal of the American Osteopathic Association, Journal of Bodywork and Movement Therapies, Osteopathic Medicine and Primary Care Journal, Osteopathic Research Web, OSTMED.DR, PEDro, PubMed sowie scholar google durchgeführt.
