Abstract:

Osteopathic medicine was founded on observation, experimentation, and patient-centered care. These principles, first emphasized by A.T. Still, MD, DO, continue to define the dual role of the osteopathic physician as both clinician and investigator. This article, based on the 2025 Thomas L. Northup Lecture, explores the historical evolution of research and practice in osteopathy, highlights Dr. Northup's enduring contributions to evidence-based scholarship, and reflects on the ongoing need to advance osteopathic research to validate and strengthen the profession. I hope to follow Dr. Northup's tradition by promoting the dissemination of current osteopathic literature and encouraging clinician-researchers to engage in scientific inquiry that bridges the laboratory and the treatment table.
