Abstract:
Introduction: Chronic heart failure is on the rise, mainly due to the aging population. Thanks to medical advances in cardiac revascularization, the mortality rate has decreased with coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG) surgery. This open-heart surgery carries with it complications in different systems (respiratory, circulatory, and musculoskeletal). Therefore, postoperative treatment is necessary to improve both short- and long-term recovery. Objectives: The objective of the review was to evaluate the effects of osteopathic manipulative treatment (OMT) in patients after cardiac surgery.
Materials and methods:
A search of randomized controlled trials and clinical cases between 1989 and 2024 was conducted in the Cochrane Registry, PubMed, and PEDro. The PEDro and SIGN scales were used to assess the methodological quality of the studies. Results: Seven articles were included in which osteopathic therapy in surgically treated patients with heart problems had favorable results in terms of improving pain, cardiorespiratory, and structural problems. Conclusions: With osteopathic treatment after surgery, patients will obtain more benefits than with conventional rehabilitation alone. (translated by Ostlib)
