Abstract:

Background: The effects of osteopathic treatments on heart rate variability (HRV) are contradictory especially in craniosacral techniques. This randomized controlled study uses the “combined technique of the anterior-posterior and transverse course of the tentorium cerebelli” (Cloet & Groß, 1999, pp. 108-109) ,to investigate the influence of a craniosacral intervention on the autonomic nervous system. Research design and method: 32 participants were randomly assigned to two groups; three were excluded from the statistical analysis due to low respiratory rate. The study group (n=16) was treated by a trained osteopath, while the placebo group (n=13) was treated by a person without osteopathic training. HRV measurements (RMSSD, SDNN, LF, HF) were conducted using Polar H10 sensor and Kubios HRV software before and after an approximately 20-minute intervention. The significance level was set at α =0.05 (two-tailed) with a 95% confidence interval. Results: Due to non-normally distributed data, both parametric and non-parametric tests were applied. Significant differences were found for RMSSD (Wilcoxson, p=0.041; d=0.64) and LF (Welch, p=0.037; Wilcoxon, p=0.032; d=0.87). No significant differences were observed for SDNN (d= 0.64), while HF showed significant differences but with a weak effect size (Wilcoxon, p=0.0021; d=0.27). Conclusion: Treatment of the reciprocal tension membrane, especially the tentorium cerebelli, tends to have positive effects on the sympathetic and parasympathetic components of the autonomic nervous system.
