Abstract:

The mediastinum, the connective tissue’s stock in the thoracic cavity is divided anatomically into four parts: the superior mediastinum has the thymus gland as its only organ. The inferior mediastinum can be subdivided into three parts: the anterior mediastinum situated between the sternum and the ribs, the posterior mediastinum connecting the peritoneal and the thoracic cavity, and the middle mediastinum, which is almost completely taken up with the heart and the pericardium.
