Abstract:
Objectives: This in vivo study aimed to compare the effects on range of motion, neutral zone, stiffness and hysteresis of a Mitchell’s Muscle Energy Technique (MET) Vs an original myotensive technique by « strain shortening » (SS) Methods: 23 healthy volunteers aged 22 ± 2 years old, with no cervical spine pain, were recruited. Each subject received a myotensive technique (MET or SS) on the restricted side. The ranges of motion and strenght were measured before and after the osteopathic technique. The neutral zones, stiffness and hysteresis were determined and compared. Results: The MET showed significant differences on the range of motion, neutral zone stiffness, terminal zone stiffness and hysteresis. The SS technique showed significant differences in the neutral zone and the hysteresis. Conclusion: Our study suggests that the strain shortening technique has a positive effect on the viscoelastic properties of the tissues in cervical spine region.
