Abstract:
Background: Dysfunction of the pelvic floor muscles (PFMs) can lead to chronic pelvic pain syndromes, fecal incontinence, sexual disturbances and stress urinary incontinence (SUI).Objective: To evaluate if a singular internal osteopathic technique applied on the PFMs can improve the conservative PFM training significantly with women who suffer from SUI. Design: ad hoc randomized controlled trial Methods: 28 women suffering from SUI were allocated to a study group, PFM training plus internal osteopathic treatment (n=14), or control group, PFM training (n=14). The period of treatment was about four months for both groups. A pad test was carried out at the beginning and the end of this period in order to determine the difference of the amount of urinary leakage. In addition, a standardized PF questionnaire was used to evaluate the subjective problems with the bladder and PFMs. Results: The difference in urinary leakage before the treatments was not significant between study and control group (p=0,6523). The treatments achieved a significant reduction of urinary leakage in both groups (p=0,0014). However, no statistically significant difference between both groups was observed (p=0,6311). The same result was produced with the PF questionnaire: a significant reduction of the subjective problems in both groups but no statistically difference between them. Conclusion: The applied osteopathic technique on the PFMs does not achieve a statistically significant reduction of urinary leakage in women suffering from SUI who do conservative PFM training. Further research in this field is required for osteopathy and internal techniques.
