Abstract:
Background: Osteopathic treatments constitute the largest portion of complementary medical treatments in Switzerland. Within the Shared Decision-Making approach, the importance of collaboration with patients is considered fundamental for a successful therapy. The requirement for this is a precise understanding of patients' expectations. Objective: To assess the expectations of patients regarding osteopaths and osteopathic treatment.Study Design: This study is a qualitative study. Methods: In ten interviews, ten adult individuals and two children were interviewed using open interview guidelines. The analysis was conducted using qualitative content analysis with the help of the software program MAXQDA 2022.Results: Patients expect a high level of social competence from osteopaths. A good, trusting connection on a human level and effective communication are requirements for successful collaboration. The treatment should be individualized and holistic, identifying the causes of ailments and bringing about a significant improvement in symptoms. Explanations, instructions, as well as interdisciplinary collaboration, are valued.Discussion: It is important for osteopaths to develop their communicative skills and to comprehensively perceive patients. Patients want to be active participants in their recovery. It is essential to guide them and to have self-awareness about the importance of being perceived as a reliable part of the healthcare system in an interdisciplinary network.
