Abstract:
Background: Osteopathic manipulative treatment (OMT) has been studied in patients with chronic respiratory diseases, such as chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, and asthma. However, few studies have assessed the efficacy of OMT in patients with cystic fibrosis (CF). Objective: To evaluate the changes of lung function, exercise capacity, and psychosocial issues in adult CF patients receiving OMT in addition to standard outpatient management. Methods: 5 adults patients with CF (4 females, 1 male), mean age : 38.4 years (range: 21.8-54.2), mean BMI 21 kg/m2 (range: 18-23.3) underwent 6 sessions (duration 60 minutes each) of OMT in a 3 -months period (5 sessions every week; the 6th after 2 months). At baseline and at the end of OMTcycle every patient performed spirometry (FVC, FEV1, FEV1/FVC, PEF), six-minute walking test (6MWT) and completed CFQR questionnaire. The paired t test was used for the mean comparison and a value of p < 0.05 was considered as significant. Results: At the end of OMT program a significant improvement in walking distance was observed (x±SD: 537 ± 51 vs 569 ± 52, p < 0.004). The total score of CFQR questionnaire showed an increase, in particular in emotional domain (x ± SD: 84 ± 9 vs 93 ± 8, p < 0.06). No significant differences in spirometric parameters were found. Conclusion: This pilot study shows that OMT in addition to standard management may improve exercise capacity in CF adults patients. Questionnaire findings suggest that OMT may affect CF patients' perception of quality of life. Additional studies are needed to assess the clinical use of OMT in adults patients with CF.
