Abstract:

Motility describes the ability of living structures to move independently. Sutherland was the first to use this term in osteopathy. Visceral movement independent of breathing is described by Barral and Mercier as intrinsic motility. This movement however is an expression of visceral compensation, as a sinking organ is returned to its original position by the surrounding structures. The proper description in this case should be extrinsic motility, as opposed to the intrinsic motility movement of rhythmic expansion-compression.

Motilität bezeichnet die Eigenschaft lebendiger Strukturen, sich selbst zu bewegen. In der Osteopathie wird der Begriff erstmals von Sutherland verwendet. Barral und Mercier beschreiben eine atemunabhängige räumliche Verlagerung der Viszera als intrinsische Motilität. Doch diese Bewegung ist Ausdruck einer viszeralen Kompensation, wenn ein sinkendes Organ von den umgebenden Strukturen an seinen ursprüngliche Platz zurückgeführt wird. Sie sollte daher als extrinsische Motilität bezeichnet werden und von der rhythmischen Expansion-Kompression als intrinsische Motilität unterschieden werden.
