Abstract:
The article discusses the role of understanding sensorimotor development of child for pediatric osteopathy. Osteopathy will support normal child development, if it includes the logic of sensorimotor development in diagnosis and treatment. The discussion focuses on the visceral, neuro-hormonal and somatic functions that carry the development of uprightness: neck stability, decreasing Moro reflex, fine motor skills of the hand, eye movements and vision. In achieving these abilities the prone position plays a key role. On the basis of recent finding in neuroscience the sensorimotor system seems to mediate between internal growth processes and the external environment. It enables us to be in the world and act on it at the same time. By including the sensorimotor development into the osteopathic approach we are able to define the merits and limitations of pediatric osteopathy.
