Abstract:
This study is a retrospective and descriptive review of scientific publications on osteopathy using a bibliometric methodology. An analysis of the MEDLINE database from January 1, 2000, to December 31, 2009, reveals that osteopathy is a discipline that receives relatively little attention compared to other disciplines (“Osteopathic medicine”: 261 articles; “Acupuncture”: 3,632 articles; “Primary Health Care”: 20,734 articles). Only industrialized countries evaluate the discipline, with Anglo-Saxon countries publishing more than 90% of the articles. A single journal (JAOA) alone publishes more than 64% of the articles on this topic. Osteopathy is still very rarely and very poorly evaluated today. The reasons are likely a lack of interest among clinicians, difficult methodological challenges, and a lack of financial resources within the discipline. The popularity of osteopathy and the 2007 decrees mandating recommendations from the Haute Autorité de Santé (HAS) should be sufficient reasons for the discipline to evaluate itself, validate its indications, and identify its contraindications through means other than its injury rate. Its credibility and long-term viability depend on it. (translated by Ostlib)
