Abstract:

Osteopaths partly define themselves via their unique manual capacities. The trust in the power of their hand is contrasted by measurable insufficient palpatory accuracy and missing self–reflection. Hence it is often overlooked, that hands might also be instruments of violence and that in view of those professionally used metaphors of ”blockages”, ”tissue–work” etc. hardly any attention is paid to the patient's story.

Osteopathen definieren sich zum Teil über die besonderen Fähigkeiten ihrer Hände. Dem Vertrauen, das der Macht der osteopathischen Hände zugeschrieben wird, stehen messbar mangelhafte palpatorische Genauigkeit und fehlende Selbstkritik gegenüber. Dabei wird übersehen, dass Hände auch ein Werkzeug der Gewalt sein können und dass im Rahmen der berufsspezifischen Metaphern von „Blockierungen”, „Gewebearbeit” usw. der Patient mit „seiner Erzählung” kaum mehr zu Wort kommt.
