Abstract:
Objective: The objective of this study is to assess the efficacy of osteopathic treatment following a specific protocol in patients with temporomandibular dysfunction (TMD). Methods: This was a single-arm, open-label, interventional study conducted over two clinic visits, each two weeks apart, at the clinics of an osteopathic training institution in the Paris region between January and March 2024. The main inclusion criteria were: age > 18 years and the presence of TMD with facial pain modulated by mandibular function, and restricted mouth opening for more than three months. The numerical rating scale (NRS) was used to measure changes in the pain experienced by patients. The Therabite Range of Motion Scale was used to assess changes in the range of mouth opening. Results: A total of 24 patients (10 men and 14 women) were included in the study between January and March 2024. The mean age at enrollment was 24.3 ± 3.0 years. Four women were excluded during the study; 20 participants completed the entire protocol: the differences in pain scores at enrollment (3.7 ± 1.84) and at the end of treatment during the second visit (0.5 ± 1.00) were statistically significant (p < 0.001). The differences in mouth opening range at baseline (40.3 ± 4.69) and at the end of treatment during the second visit (49.7 ± 5.86) were statistically significant (p < 0.001). Conclusion: This study suggests the value and benefits of osteopathic treatment in the management of TMD. However, further research involving a control group and a larger number of patients would be warranted to increase the statistical power and objectivity of the results obtained. Abstract original language:
