Abstract:

Objective To determine whether the eye-foot postural pattern plays a role in athletic performance. To investigate whether differences in forefoot pressure among elite snowboarders result in changes in spinal dysfunction detected during clinical examination. Methods We conducted a cross-sectional study involving 35 elite athletes (from the French Ski School and the International Snowboard Federation) aged 26 ± 2 years. Among these athletes, 19 were regular (left front foot) and 16 were goofy (right front foot). We performed postural tests to determine their eye-foot postural pattern and osteopathic tests to identify spinal dysfunctions. Results We were able to demonstrate the impact of the eye-foot pattern (p-value = 0.0001) on the athletic performance of elite snowboarders and an asymmetry in spinal dysfunctions both at the vertebral level (p-value = 0.0005) and in the type of rotation between regular and goofy riders (p-value = 0.0006). Conclusion This study demonstrated a correlation between postural pattern and a snowboarder’s performance level. In this context, a differentiated osteopathic approach can be proposed based on the snowboarder’s leading foot and dominant eye. These various factors could be incorporated prospectively to improve snowboarders’ muscle recruitment and technical performance. (translated by Ostlib)
