Abstract:
Osteopathy is a holistic science based on differential diagnosis, treatment, and health promotion, without the use of drugs or surgery. The use of cytokines as biological markers with an important role in the immunological and nervous communication has allowed to confirm the clinical efficacy of osteopathy, from a laboratory and analytical point of view. The objectives of this systematic review are to investigate the relation between the various types of cytokines and the signs, symptoms or complaints presented in an osteopathy consultation, and to determine which cytokines have scientific evidence to be used to support the diagnosis/monitoring of target conditions for osteopathic treatment. The PRISMA guidelines were followed, and 5 articles were included using the electronic databases Pubmed, Web of Science, Scopus and iJom, during the research process carried out between February and April 2022. Only experimental studies published after 2000 in Portuguese and English were accepted, focusing on adult patients with musculoskeletal complaints subjected to an analysis of cytokine levels and an osteopathic intervention. Based on the results obtained, we found that cytokines such as IL-8, TNF-α, MCP-1, MIP-1α and G-CSF can be used as biological markers in Osteopathy research, however, with some limitations described by the authors themselves, such as the difficulty in the measurement process. More research is needed within this area in order to overcome some of these limitations
