Abstract:

Background: The number of osteopathic consultations has been increasing in the province of Quebec, Canada, since the 1980s. Despite its growing popularity, osteopathy is not taught in a university setting and is not considered a regulated profession. The objective of this project is to attempt to develop a demographic profile of osteopaths, as well as to gather their views on the science and practice of osteopathy and their desired training in the field. Methods: Participants were recruited to complete a questionnaire modeled after a U.S. study and validated by the research team. The questionnaire was sent via email (SurveyMonkey), through various osteopathic associations, and via the social media platform Facebook. Results: 229 respondents (148 women and 81 men) completed the questionnaire: mean age of 38 ± 9 years; mean number of years in practice: 5.0 ± 5.0 years; 31% reported working between 21 and 30 hours per week, with revenue ranging from 41,000 to 60,000 Canadian dollars; 63% of respondents had completed a university degree before or after beginning their osteopathic studies, which lasted an average of 5.4 ± 1.3 years. The majority of Quebec osteopaths perceive osteopathic research in Quebec as being less active compared to other countries. The majority supports the creation of a university program to address this gap. Conclusion: The data from this questionnaire may be useful for the legislative process regarding osteopathy and its integration into the university system. (translated by Ostlib)
