Abstract:
Introduction: Deformational or positional plagiocephaly is a malformation (asymmetry) of the skull caused by constant pressure exerted on the same region. Following the “Back to Sleep” campaign to reduce the number of cases of sudden infant death syndrome, an increase in cranial deformities known as “posterior or occipital positional plagiocephaly” began to be observed. Objectives: To analyze the most recent scientific evidence on the effectiveness of osteopathy in positional or deformational plagiocephaly.
Materials and methods:
A bibliographic search of articles was conducted in four databases (PubMed, Google Scholar, PEDro, and Cochrane). The descriptors osteopathy, “non-synostotic or positional plagiocephaly,” and “musculoskeletal manipulations” were used. Studies published in the last 15 years in English, Spanish, or French, conducted in humans, and whose study types were clinical cases, reviews and case studies, doctoral theses, and clinical treatment guidelines were included. Nine clinical trials, two observational studies, and eight reviews were selected. Results: The most commonly used manual therapy techniques are motor development enhancement exercises, active and passive mobilization of the cervical spine, flexion and stretching of the sternocleidomastoid muscle, and specific osteopathic techniques. Osteopathy would indeed be an effective treatment method for plagiocephaly, especially in less severe cases of the condition. On the other hand, repositioning measures are very beneficial as long as they are started 6-8 weeks after birth. Conclusions: It is advisable to monitor the baby from birth, so that an early diagnosis can be made and treatment can begin as soon as possible, improving the baby's progress. We believe that further studies should be conducted to explore this topic in greater depth, in order to provide appropriate osteopathic intervention of higher quality and assertiveness for the benefit of patients. Abstract original language:
