Abstract:

Background The pterion is the region within the skull in which the parietal, frontal, sphenoid and temporal bones meet, typically in the form of an H-shaped suture. In textbooks concrete statements on the bony variations that may be encountered on the pterion are hardly found. Objectives Representation of the different variants of the pterion in humans. Methods A meta-analysis was carried out along with a qualitative analysis of publications on pterion types based on an overall collective of more than 5700 skull halves. This was achieved by a systematic database-based literature survey that was not restricted to any particular historical timeframe. Results The four main types of pterion described in the literature are the sphenoparietal, epipteric, frontotemporal and stellate variants. Numerous sub-forms have also been described for the epipteric variant. Conclusion For the region of the pterion numerous bony variants are described. Further research is required to create an accurate summary of the side differences and the different variants of the pterion.

Hintergrund Das Pterion ist eine Region am Schädel, die vom Os parietale, Os frontale, Os sphenoidale und Os temporale gebildet wird. In Lehrbüchern finden sich kaum konkrete Aussagen zu den knöchernen Varianten, die am Pterion angetroffen werden können. Zielsetzung Darstellung der verschiedenen Varianten des Pterions beim Menschen. Methode: Qualitative Analyse der Varianten des Pterions mittels einer systematischen Übersichtsarbeit auf Grundlage einer datenbankbasierten Literaturrecherche ohne Begrenzung auf bestimmte Zeiträume. Ergebnisse Die vier Hauptvarianten, die in der Literatur dargestellt werden, sind die sphenoparietale, die epipterische, die frontotemporale und die stellate Variante. Von der epipterischen Variante werden zahlreiche Unterformen beschrieben. Schlussfolgerung Für die Region des Pterions werden zahlreiche knöcherne Varianten beschrieben. Es bedarf weiterer Forschung, um eine genaue Zusammenfassung der Seitenunterschiede und der verschiedenen epipterischen Varianten zu erstellen.
