Abstract:
Throughout the history of osteopathic manipulative medicine physicians have used specific treatments to affect human physiology. In early osteopathic literature, there are references that specific forms of osteopathic cranial manipulative medicine can affect the autonomic nervous system (ANS) to benefit the patient.1 Osteopathic practitioners of the time based their observations on the clinical response of the patient, including improved digestive function, decreased heart rate and blood pressure, and an overall sense of wellbeing. The goal of this research project is to begin to understand how osteopathic manipulative techniques, such as the cccipital-atlantal (OA) decompression and compression of the fourth ventricle (CV-4), can interface with human physiologic processes in response to a sympathetic nervous system challenge.
