Abstract:

In the first part of this article about the skin, its structure and the division into areas have been described. In the second part the whole organ is closely examined with respect to its astonishing variety of functions: Protective functions (against water loss, heat loss, and heat accumulation, infection, radiation, acids and solvents, mechanical insults), transmission of power (gripping, walking), excretions and ”respiration„, energy storage, sensorium (touching, temperature, pain), and signaling (optically, by smell).
