Abstract:
Background: This study aims to analyse osteopathic competence in dealing with people with dementia, record applied techniques and subjectively perceived treatment success, and critically examine limitations within practical implementation and training. Research design and method: Mixed methods design based on a standardized online survey. Descriptive and exploratory presentation of quantitative and qualitative assessments by German osteopaths on training, techniques, experiences, and therapeutic success. Descriptive responses were included after qualitative content analysis according to Mayring. Results: About half of the osteopaths regularly treat patients with dementia, with early to middle stages of the disease predominating. In over 80% of practices, the proportion of dementia patients is 5% or less. Around half of the participants rate their practical knowledge as (rather) good, while just under 20% report significant gaps in their knowledge. Treatment goals are primarily pain relief, improvement of hemodynamic supply, and promotion of vegetative relaxation, but less frequently cognitive improvements. The success of therapy is defined primarily in terms of quality of life, symptom relief, and maintaining independence. Over 80% of respondents rate the teaching of dementia-related content in the curriculum as inadequate, and 71% would like to see targeted continuing education opportunities. Conclusion: Although patients with dementia make up only a small proportion of the treatment spectrum, their treatment requires specific knowledge and adapted therapeutic skills. Gaps in knowledge, especially in diagnostics, underscore the need for specific training and continuing education opportunities. The symptom-oriented objectives point to the potential of osteopathic therapy to support quality of life and everyday functions.
