Abstract:
Objective: Evaluation of the effectiveness of osteopathic treatment on thoracolumbar junction back pain. Study design: Pre-post pilot-study Participants: 15 patients aged between 22 and 65 years (average age 44 ± 14 years) suffering from thoracolumbar junction back pain took part in the study. No drop-outs were recorded. Intervention: After a six-week waiting period without any treatment the participants received three individual osteopathic treatments in two week intervals based on the current diagnostic findings. Outcome parameters: Dysfunctional behaviour measured with the Roland Morris Disability Questionaire (RMDQ), pain intensity assessed by means of a visual analogue scale (VAS), osteopathic dysfunctions identified by osteopathic examination. Results: The pre-post relation showed a 74% improvement of dysfunctional behavior, pain intensity decreased by 81%. The comparison between the two study phases reached a statistically significant outcome (p<0,001; 95% CI= 7,7 to 9,8 and p<0,001; 95% CI= 45,0 to 67,0) During the waiting period no changes could be observed. A consistent tendency in support of predefined osteopathic dysfunctions could not be detected. Conclusion: Three osteopathic treatments in a six-week period resulted in a significant improvement of pain intensity and dysfunctional behavior of thoracolumbar junction back pain. Follow-up studies are to advise with regard to confirm the results and to reveal long term benefit.
