Abstract:

Questions addressing the soul are deeply dependent on historical and cultural contexts. There is no universally accepted perception of the soul, even though many concepts claim universality for themselves. In occidental philosophy two main issues can be recognized: the problem of conceptualizing the relationship between soul and body, and the exclusivity of the soul to living beings. The beginnings of this tradition lie in the idealistic views of Plato and Aristotle's hylemorphism. In medieval times questions began to be asked regarding the relationship between God and the soul. The advent of modernity caused the problem of the dualism of body and soul to become acute. Today we are confronted with a sheer unmanageable jungle of meanings concerning the soul, from which everybody helps themselves with whatever they need.

Die Frage nach der Seele ist stark von historischen und kulturellen Kontexten abhängig. Es gibt keine universelle Auffassung von Seele, obwohl viele Auffassungen für sich Universalität beanspruchen. In den abendländischen Diskursen kann eine Gemeinsamkeit in der Problematisierung des Verhältnisses zwischen Seele und Körper gesehen werden und in der Tatsache, dass diese nur Lebendigem zugeschrieben wird. In dieser Tradition stehen am Beginn die idealistische Auffassung Platons und der Hylemorphismus Aristoteles'. Mit dem Mittelalter gesellte sich die Frage nach dem Verhältnis von Seele und Gott hinzu. Mit der Moderne wurde das Problem eines Leib-Seele-Dualismus brennend. Heute sind wir von einem schier unüberschaubaren Bedeutungsdschungel, die Seele betreffend, umgeben, aus dem sich jeder nach Lust und Laune bedient.
