Abstract:

Crossing the border of the skin during medical surgery can be interpreted as a rite of passage in the sense of Arnold van Gennep. The author examines from this point of view this generally accepted healing activity for its social implications and for the frame for the development of its transformatory power. The result are four considerations for the osteopathic treatment, which on the one hand concern dealing with people, which have been operated as well as dealing with scars from surgery and on the other hand stimulate the reflection of one's own social instruments of power.
