Abstract:
This article provides information on the formation and development of our limbs on the basis of Blechschmidts theoretical model as a partial process in the framework of the embryo's development. First, the spatial relationships of all limbs are illustrated. This part depicts the connection with the ectodermal ring and the so called spinal-peritoneal ankles as well as connections to blood vessels, heart-liver mass, and umbilical cord. Furthermore, the formal and structural development is illustrated especially for the upper limbs. At the beginning the limb anlagen are laterally growing skin folds. Early in development and long before muscles and joints can be observed the so-called growth adduction is seen with growth ankles and extensor and flexor side. The formation of these structures is directed by the piston-like growth of the cartilaginous skeletal elements. Cartilages are the first actively mobile elements of our musculoskeletal system. The main focus of this article lies on morphological aspects. However, there is a broad overlap with the principles of osteopathic view on development and function.
