Abstract:
Aim: The study aims to investigate whether osteopathy can influence swallowing disorders and frequent vomiting of mucus and food when suffering from a congenital myasthenic syndrome with a defect in the MUSK gene. Method: The present study is a single-subject design with daily recordings. It is divided into two different phases, the first one with, and a second one without osteopathic treatments. After a 12-week duration for the first phase, the second phase had to be extended by two weeks due to illness, resulting in a period of 14 weeks. During phase two, 9 osteopathic treatments were carried out following the open box principle. Parents collected data on, among other things, the frequency of vomiting mucus and food as well as the amount of orally consumed food throughout the study. Results: Two of the three hypotheses presented showed a statistically significant difference: with osteopathic treatments the quantity of oral, liquid food was significantly increased, and the frequency of vomiting tube-administered food was significantly reduced. The osteopathic treatments had no significant effect on the frequency of vomiting mucus. Discussion: Despite the positive results, it must be added that only the swallowing disorders with liquids, not with mushy or solid food, showed a significant improvement. Furthermore, this is a single case study, and the results are therefore not applicable to all patients with CMS, as the symptoms of the different subtypes vary greatly and also show varying degrees of severity. The osteopathic treatments led to further improvements that could be investigated in future intervention studies.
