Abstract:
The future of osteopathy belongs to activity. In osteopathic clinical reasoning there are only two distinct states (function/dysfunction), while clinical physiology describes a continuum of states of activity in which at least four states are clinically relevant: normal resting activity and normal hyperactivity, non-regulated hyper-activity and hypo-activity. Since the concept of osteopathic function does not match the complex reality of tissue activity, it has developed into an obstacle for development. Regarding organ activity, „osteopathic function” does not translate into physiological function. This is illustrated by comparing tissue qualities and osteopathic function in inflammatory responses. The article argues that the current crisis in osteopathy can be overcome through a biologically and clinically inspired understanding of the states of tissue activity.
