Abstract:
Osteopathic thinking appeared at the end of the 19th century, created by a medical doctor : Andrew Taylor Still. Still was searching for an alternative to the US Midwest’s “Heroic Medicine”, which killed more often than not at the time. Brought up a Methodist, Still later based his theory on metaphysical ideas, mixing vitalism and mechanism. His therapeutic approach was inspired by ancestral and empirical manual techniques. Amongst criterion defining experimental science, there is the ability to distance it from metaphysics. Therefore, we could question the possibility for Osteopathy to be an object of science or not. By definition, if it still claims to follow dogmas and principles from its founder, No. Although Yes, if it is studied as a praxis, a clinical science disengaged from the original discourse.
