Abstract:

Introduction More and more studies are performed on intestinal health, more precisely on the microbiote in connection to current societal diseases. Numerous articles show a link between hepatic gland dysfunction and microbiotic imbalance. These research also show that physiological mechanisms for this system are far from understood. This study aims to assess the action of the hepatic gland on the amount of VOC in the expired air, through the action of an osteopathic technique on the intrinsic hepatic mobility. Methods Our study included 99 healthy subjects aged 18 to 25, randomised in two groups (experimental/control). We measured the VOC (methylacetate, hydrogen and methane) before and after an osteopathic technique applied to the hepatic region. Results Results showed a significant decrease of hydrogen concentration in the experimental group after the osteopathic technique (p ≤ 0.05) and a decrease for methylacetate and methane. Conclusion This study shows a correlation between the use of an hepatic osteopathic technique and the body’s capacity to regulate expired VOC (in particular the hydrogen) in young, healthy subjects. We can assume first that the liver has a physiological link with digestive gas and second that osteopathy has a positive impact on this link, thus on a yet to be recognised physiological mechanism.
