Abstract:
Osteopathy emerged in the 19th century as one of several attempts to theorize a form of medicine considered too empirical. Based on the vitalist principle that “seeds of life (blood seed)” circulate through our arteries to maintain the perfection of life, various concepts were developed to describe what might impede their proper circulation. Thus, the concepts of osteopathic lesion and dysfunction made manual techniques the tools of choice for remedying the “blockages” likely to impair the regenerative action of these seeds of life. Today, osteopaths struggle to find a theoretical model that aligns with modern biomedical sciences. Yet clinical practice shows us every day that pain—and more specifically musculoskeletal pain—is at the center of our consultations. It is therefore time to reflect and implement experimental protocols to elucidate the neurophysiological processes that might explain and justify our practices and our approach to patient care. The stakes for the future of osteopathy are high. Depending on whether representatives of the profession define it through outdated concepts or based on data provided by neurophysiology and clinical research, osteopathy will either be reduced to a wellness profession or take its place among frontline healthcare professions. Abstract original language:
