Abstract:

The notochord, which develops during gastrulation and later catabolizes completely, causes segmentation of the paraxial mesoderm, whose sheaths in turn cause somites to develop. The ventromedial part of the notochord is called the sclerotome. Further segmentation results in the development of the central vertebral body, the vertebral disks, the lateral vertebral arch and the intervertebral spaces. The spinal cord shows regionalization instead of segmentation.
