Abstract:

Objectives The main objective of this report is to describe the utility of osteopathic treatment in patients with dysphagia. Clinical characteristics The case of a 3-year-old boy with severe dysphagia due to caustic substance ingestion and the postsurgical osteopathic treatment are described. The patient showed scoliotic posture with left cervical side-bending, and limitation of tongue and cervical spine mobility. Sensitivity and reflexes were normal. Intervention and results Osteopathic structural, cranial and visceral techniques were performed, with special emphasis on the anterior cervical muscles and the tongue. From an initial status of severe dysphagia, almost normal swallowing was achieved. Conclusion The good results achieved in this patient reveal the importance of manual treatment in some cases of swallowing dysfunctions.

Objetivos El objetivo de este artículo es exponer el interés del tratamiento osteopático en los trastornos de la deglución. Características clínicas Niño de 3 años de edad, afectado de disfagia grave después de ingerir agentes cáusticos y su posterior tratamiento osteopático posquirúrgico. Presenta actitud escoliótica con lateroflexión cervical izquierda, así como restricción de la movilidad del raquis cervical y de la lengua. La sensibilidad y los reflejos eran normales. Intervención y resultados Se realizaron técnicas osteopáticas de normalización estructural, craneal y visceral, con especial énfasis en la musculatura cervical anterior y la lengua. Se consiguió pasar de una disfagia grave a una deglución compatible con la normalidad. Conclusión Debido a los resultados satisfactorios observados en la evolución del paciente, pensamos que se pone de manifiesto la importancia que tiene la osteopatía en el tratamiento de determinados casos de trastornos de la deglución.
