Abstract:
Objective: Primitive reflexes are stereotyped, automatic movements triggered by sensory stimuli. They appear during pregnancy and are integrated during the first year of life to activate the sensorimotor functions involved in postural control. The integration of the Asymmetric Tonic Neck Reflex (ATNR) into the motor system enables the acquisition of the perceptual and sensorimotor skills that accompany cognitive development. Failure to integrate this reflex is a sign of disharmonious perceptual-motor development, which can lead to learning difficulties. What is the influence of ATNR integration on the proprioceptive system and reading speed in children with reading delays? Methods: Twenty-eight children aged 8 to 11 were divided into two groups: 13 treated with a Primordial Motor Integration® technique for the ATNR, and 15 untreated. Their progress was assessed using postural and lexical tests administered in two series six weeks apart: the Schilder Test, the Posturo-Dynamic Test (PDN), the Maddox Postural Test, and a text-reading test. Results After six weeks, the differences between the groups were highly significant in favor of the treated group for the Schilder Test (p=0.002) and the PDN Test (p=0.0001). Intra-group differences within the treatment group were highly significant for the Schilder Test (p=0.01) and the PDN Test (p=0.008); the Maddox Postural Test showed a 15% reduction in vertical heterophoria. For text reading, intra-group differences were very highly significant for both the treatment (p=0.007) and control (p=0.002) groups. Conclusion: The persistence of a primitive reflex movement sustains proprioceptive interference that disrupts the sensorimotor mechanisms involved in learning acquisition. The integration of RTAC promotes the regulation of cervico-scapular coordination, pelvic-spinal proprioceptive dysfunctions, and abnormalities in visuospatial localization. To assess cognitive abilities, the sample size and duration of the study should be increased; it would be advisable to assess oculocerebellar coordination using a cervical motor test combined with a visuospatial localization test to evaluate the influence of the RTAC’s perceptual-motor mechanisms on reading. Abstract original language:
