Abstract:

Preterm and term NICU newborns need to achieve not only clinical stability but also maturation of various organ systems. Within this context, manipulative osteopathic treatment (OMT) in the first days of life is fundamental in preventing cranial asymmetries, vagus nerve tension, reflux, sleep problems, irritability and reducing hospitalization time. In this article, the scientific literature on the osteopathic approach in NICUs was reviewed and synthesized in order to formulate recommendations for future research and practices. After searching for articles in English and Portuguese in the LILACS, SciELO and MedLine / PubMed databases, we used the following DeSC: Premature Newborn. Musculoskeletal Manipulations. Intensive Care Units, Osteopathic Manipulation. A total of 43 articles were selected, 35 excluded because they are not relevant to the topic and used 08. The OMT in neonatal care contributes to reducing the length of hospital stay, solving gastrointestinal problems, managing pain, improving cranial asymmetry, related problems. vagus nerve compression, minimizing and correcting somatic dysfunctions and playing an important role in early evaluation. The scarcity of articles with greater methodological rigidity and scientific evidence showing the specific effects of osteopathic manipulation on the ICU premature and neonate population was one of the most significant limitations of this review.
