Abstract:

The red reflex test is an osteopathic standard test, but only few publications can be found regarding this subject. Aim of this study is to provide an overview of the osteopathic literature concerning the red reflex test and its interpretations. Methods A systematic sensitive literature search without time limit in osteopathic and medical databases was supplemented by a comprehensive systematic internet and manual search. Results 15 literature sources providing details concerning the methods and interpretation of the red reflex test published between 1899 and 2007 could be found. Despite diverging executions and interpretations, concerning the segmental diagnosis of structural and functional lesions the red reflex test was consistently described as useful. The evidence for the validity of the test is low due to a lack of studies.

Der Red-Reflex-Test ist ein osteopathischer Standardtest, jedoch finden sich dazu wenige Literaturquellen. Ziel ist es, einen Überblick über die osteopathische Literatur hinsichtlich des Red-Reflex-Tests und seiner Interpretationen zu geben. Methode: Eine systematische sensitive Literaturrecherche ohne Zeitlimit in osteopathischen und medizinischen Datenbanken wurde durch eine Internet- und eine Handrecherche ergänzt. Ergebnis: In einem Publikationszeitraum von 1899 bis 2007 wurden 15 Literaturstellen mit Angaben zur Methodik und Interpretation des Red-Reflex-Tests ermittelt. Trotz unterschiedlicher Durchführung und Interpretation wird übereinstimmend ein Nutzen des Red-Reflex-Tests zur segmentalen Diagnostik von strukturellen und funktionellen Veränderungen gesehen. Die Evidenz der Aussagekraft des Tests ist aufgrund mangelnder Studien sehr gering.
