Abstract:
Neurophysiology of the brain is explaining more and more of the various mechanisms involved in the placebo effect. This article reflects, among others, on items from Fabrizzio Benedetti’s studies. The use of functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) shows how expectation and pavlovian conditioning are implied in opioid and non-opioid systems initiation. These systems are involved in pain control. Expectation and conditioning depend on the psychosocial context during medical consultation. The article offers the hypothesis of a specific psychosocial context in osteopathic practice. First of all, the history of medicine has long shown the symbolic therapeutic strength of the practitioner’s hand, then, the discourse some of the osteopaths are using, partly logical partly metaphysical, promotes the hope of recovery. The fMRI brings on new opportunities to investigate those hypotheses.
