Abstract:

An important question in research and especially in osteopathy is how to use palpation as a measurement instrument presenting validity and reliability from the scientific point of view. In that article we are temptating to demonstrate the essential aspects which need to be respected when the hand is used as a measurement instrument in form of a dependant variable. The mentioned points are supported by different studies in that field. We use a clinical research example showing the application of the mentioned rules. The aim of this article is to avoid unidirectional and sometimes too strict research frames, which often exclude palpation, this wonderful tool for evaluation and treatment being at the disposal of the osteopath.
