Abstract:
Background: Due to the lack of studies investigating osteopathy in obstipated children, the current literature states that the only evidence-based treatment is drug therapy. Aim: The case-controlled study aimed to investigate whether osteopathy has more positive influence respectively mitigate the symptoms of functional constipation better than faecal softener medication. Method: 48 children suffering from constipation were divided into two groups (24 study participants each). Both groups were interviewed five times using the Cleveland Clinic Obstipation Score, ROME IV-Criteria and a defaecation journal. The control group was asked to take faecal softener medication on a daily basis. The treatment group, after undergoing a disimpaction, received three osteopathic treatments without taking any stool softening medication. The significance level was set at ?= 0,05. Result: According to the Cleveland Clinic Obstipation Score, three osteopathic treatments lead to a significantly higher reduction of symptoms (W= 271.5, p= 0.0079), between the pre- and post- measurement, than treatment with stool softening medication. Although the results of the ROME IV criteria do not describe a significant difference (p= 0.38) between the two groups, there is a mild trend towards a higher effectiveness of osteopathic treatments. Conclusion: Three osteopathic treatments lead to a higher effectiveness in reducing symptoms than treatment with stool softening medication.
