Abstract:
Background: Mindfulness has been described as an open-minded, non-judgmental, and appreciative attitude which is strongly tied to the present moment. It is an attitude towards oneself and one's environment. Considered to be an essential competence in predominantly non-verbal communication as well as in therapeutic relationships, it requires awareness for original approaches in every new situation and must be understood as a process as well as a result. The aim of the explorative study was to determine the subjects' understanding of mindfulness and its integration in their lives, as well as the subjective complaints. It was conducted with a random sample of 215 osteopaths in Austria. The design was the questionnaire method (paper/pencil and online) with open questions. The data were analysed statistically and by content analysis following the deductive method. Results: The osteopaths' understanding of mindfulness in general was primarily related to the categories “observing“, “appreciation of others/empathy“, “directing one's attention towards oneself/ others/the environment“, and “direct contact“. However, in connection with osteopathic work, the predominant categories were “being mindful in one's actions“, “focussing on others“, “directing one's attention towards oneself/ others/ the environment“, and “appreciation of others/ empathy“. Notably high ratings were given in the dimensions “observe“, “act with awareness“, and “accept without judgment“. The ratings are not associated with sex, age, or workload. The dimension “describe“ received higher ratings in more experienced osteopaths. The more mindful osteopaths had slightly fewer complaints in relation to their job and to themselves. The degree of mindfulness shows hardly any correlation with complaints regarding family or friends. Discussion: The results reflect a mindful predisposition in the interviewed osteopaths. Future studies could be conducted to explore if mindfulness has an impact on therapeutic outcome.
