Abstract:
A central goal of osteopathic practice has been to discern optimal posture and movement for each individual. Mechanical balance is thought to be a necessary condition of optimal posture and movement - the rationale for which is beyond the scope of this discussion. The thesis of this essay is that using the criterion of symmetry, while a qualitative step beyond the orthopedic, neurological and rheumatologic examinations, fails to fully reveal balanced posture and movement. Application of the criterion of proportionality portends significantly improved clinical outcomes by broadening and deepening our perspectives on three dimensional, multi-contextual whole body posture and movement balance.
